This took me longer than usual for two reasons:

1) My right eye is notably deteriorated from a stigma or something else- hopefully not!- giving me tremendous eye strain and ache whilst I work digitally. Anyhow, won’t get answers til June/July now apparently.

and

2) This was a tad more experimental than other pictures I’d done in the past.

I wanted to portray a sense of proportion and dynamic depth whilst in keeping with my minimalistic angular style but also using small details to enforce that even more e.g. The Flash’s silhouette becomes more flat colour entirely as his body seems to be much further away.

I also tried using different brushes to add texture to my usually flat designs with mark making techniques scanned in. It was interesting to see what I could do with them, in this case it was just a few lines drawn with a ‘scrapey’ pen to indicate speed lines as movement- school boy stuff really.

At this point even though it is literally painful to work at the moment I’m doing some stuff on paper, stuff I’ve been working on for a while, a bigger project which I should be able to post an update pretty soon.

For now this is a step in the right direction even if it’s become a pretty slow process.

So, the scanner I use has been out of commission for a while but s now up and running again, so-

I watched Django Unchained yesterday and was throughly impressed.

Consequently I had a cowboy sketching session today- whilst listening to ‘Western’ soundtracks of course- and the first drawing that came out was strangely good…for me and my own criticisms obviously.

The rest, unsurprisingly, weren’t very good at all but here’s the first sketch anyway.

Ok, so this is massively late, but it took a while fiddling with it until I was happy, and I went away for the weekend (to Sherwood Forest actually - it was very nice thank you!) but here’s my Bond picture - finally.

Tried a few things with lettering this time, including a failed attempt to squeeze the lettering into a Martini-shaped speech bubble - it didn’t work, but it’s all a learning experience right?

The idea behind this piece is inspired by my own reaction to this particular scene in 2006’s James Bond prequel Casino Royale, in which Bond manages to both intimidate his poker-playing nemesis by ordering a rather grand drink, and impress the glamorous girl by naming it after her. True, it’s a great scene, but as someone who’s worked behind a bar, all I could think was… what a pretentious prick!

Just to make it clear, I think Casino Royale is a brilliant film, and Daniel Craig actually makes a great Bond, just next time, keep the cocktail simple ok? Or order a beer for gods sake :P

Love Daniel Craig’s smug-ass face in this.

With twenty-two films out (and a twenty-third set for release this October), the series was the first film series to gross over a billion dollars; it was the highest-grossing series ever until surpassed by Harry Potter in 2011, but it retains the top position adjusted for inflation. And it turns fifty years old today.

FUN FACTS.

Six actors have played the iconic character - Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, and Daniel Craig.

Of them, Lazenby starred in the least (perhaps for good reason, but the quality of his performance is still disputed among fans).

Sean Connery wore a toupee in all of his films.

Actors who were offered or considered for the role include Michael Caine, Richard Burton, Cary Grant, Adam West (Adam West), Michael Gambon, James Brolin, Clint Eastwood, and Mel Gibson.

GoldenEye was the first film-to my knowledge- that got me into Bond. It’s a go to Bond film of mine just for nostalgic reasoning.

Went for the gold-ish colouring but the challenge was more the layout and the likeness of the characters.

Almost got Bean & Brosnan right but they’re not quite right.

I tried several background designs including one that used a design based around actual amber-I thought the GoldenEye key looked a lot like sap/amber- but it looked… odd.

The design I finished with wasn’t as elegant as I thought it would be but the homage to Saul Bass’ Vertigo design seemed to fit with Alec’s falling.

Overall this was fun-ish but just under 20 pages of drawings of Pierce Brosnan’s face is something I could do without in the future.

The missus brought home with her The Avengers on DVD-I know, she doesn’t know, just let her off- which I was stoked about and watched 3 times in as many days.

So great, I prefer it to The Dark Knight Rises I think.

Anyway, another one off sketch turned out to be the best I could do, must’ve been in ‘the zone’.

Really like Hawkeye & Iron Man in this one.

NOTE: I have no idea who the random head is, probably a messed up Cap’…oh dear.

Been Listening to the Skyward Sword soundtrack this week whilst doing some work.

Really amazing soundtrack for a game that I think was received in a disappointingly underwhelming way.

It had it’s flaws but overall, as an experience, it was great fun and the Zelda game that the Wii deserved.

A bit of a back log in my sketchbook at the moment.

This was a couple of pages the night I found out Michael Clarke Duncan had tragically passed away.

Really struggled to try and get his face right but most importantly: his laugh.

Enjoyed him profusely in The Green Mile and all of his appearances then after, major and minor roles alike.

First of all I can’t apologise enough to my fellow contributors on Lines of Work.

A mix of bad time keeping, experimentation, faffing around with too many prelims and just not having the intuition to know that this would take a lot fucking longer than usual.

Sorry guys, I really am.

My Aim

The main goal for this illustration was for me to test my composition, colour management and also lighting- which kind of came as a test later on in the process.

Fell into a ‘go to palette’ (kind of) again but I wanted to make it feel close and very lantern lit but now I look at it, it isn’t that at all!

The challenge I gave myself was a limited colour choice-as usual- and to make them work within a complicated layout and composite varied characters together in a ‘layered’ crowd scene with a kind of balanced lighting that could lead the eye where I wanted it- what a pretentious cock I am…

Character Design

Did a lot of prelims on marketplace ‘stuff’ and characters from Hellboy 2: The Golden Army but I thought I’d like to design a few characters myself because I like the variety of creatures that film features. Turned out that most of them were used from my prelim designs but I’m not sure if I’ve just subconsciously nicked them all.

Ah well.

The main feature of the illustration is the centre and I wanted focus to be on the 2 known- and very cool- figures from the 2nd Hellboy film; Mr. Wink and Prince Nuada.

Layout, Lighting & Composition

There’s a slight perspective ‘thing’ I tried to do, not too sure it’s very successful though.

However, the colour & lighting were what I thought would be key to my ‘style’ working alongside this layout. I used the darker red in the forefront to make sure that the lighter areas ‘behind’ would contrast well and lead up to the centre and the much lighter backdrop. The odd perspective was meant to help with this but like I said; I’m not entirely sure it works.

There is a slight symmetrical thing I tend to do stupidly which meant trying to finish this was excruciatingly longer than it should have been.

Anyway with that experimentation over I know what I’ve taken from it and how I can tackle the idea better next time- and within the time frame.

Rambled on too long, and again, I can’t apologise enough to my fellow contributors.
